Springtime on the Costa del Sol

BRIGHT.

Springtime on the Costa del Sol is our favourite season. As the winter wanes, and fresh blossoms fill the landscape, the lengthening sun-drenched weekends start to bring the Summer vibe to the area as early as March.

A Climate of Possibilities

Unlike the heat of summer, spring beckons you to live life outside for longer periods of time. Whether you’re exercising, participating in outdoor hobbies or exploring a new area, the temperature is just right, whatever you choose to do.

Marbella’s microclimate creates a unique opportunity that few destinations can match. With daytime temperatures hovering between 18°C and 25°C, mornings start off refreshingly cool, before giving way to perfect beach weather by noon. The Mediterranean waters gradually warm, inviting the season’s first swimmers while the beaches remain blissfully uncrowded.

The promenade and beaches can be blissfully quiet in springtime

Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of springtime here is the possibility of experiencing two seasons in one day. The Sierra Nevada mountains, just 2.5 hours away, maintain skiable snow well into April. The ski season in Sierra Nevada typically runs from late November to early May, but can even extend into June depending on snowfall conditions. This remarkable contrast means you could quite literally begin your day skiing down the slopes, and end it with your toes in the sand, watching the sunset at your favourite beachside chiringuito.

“Should we build snowmen or sand castles today?” Why not both!

The Costa del Sol’s Spring Flowers

Blooming flowers everywhere in Marbella’s Parque de la Constitución

For the horticulturists, and anyone who appreciates the vibrancy of Mediterranean flora, just a stroll through Marbella’s historic centre is a feast for the eyes. Cascading bougainvillea creates vibrant curtains of magenta and purple against whitewashed walls, as welcomed wafts of jasmine and orange blossoms linger in the air. Then in May, the Jacaranda trees burst into full bloom, transforming Marbella into a purple paradise.

The countryside gets even better, as the wildflowers carpet previously dormant fields with crimson poppies, golden marigolds, and delicate blue cornflowers to name but a few. For photography enthusiasts, the sierras and natural parks offer plenty of opportunity to capture the flora and fauna in full swing. There is also the botanical gardens in Málaga not to be missed! Which provides a wonderful walk-through experience this time of year.

Spring flowers everywhere

The coastal paths from Estepona to Nerja also bloom with a diverse range of plants and flowers, set amongst rows of palm trees, adding a tropical essence to the region. With the many boardwalks and promenades lining the shoreline, there are miles of blissful walkway that provide a pleasant setting to catch some rays, feel the sea breeze and enjoy being out in nature (without ever having to be too far from an ice cream kiosk).

Holy Week in Andalucía runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, where the region holds impressive religious processions and a national holiday is enjoyed from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Málaga is renowned for hosting some of Spain’s most impressive processions, and Marbella enjoys its own calendar of processions and events. Read all about Semana Santa, the local processions and Marbella’s transformation during this period in our latest Semana Santa blog.

Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses)

The May Crosses festival brings colour and culture to the streets

This festival brings neighbourhoods together in early May as communities compete to create the most beautiful floral crosses. These intricate displays, often accompanied by flamenco performances and local food stalls, provide an intimate glimpse into community life that summer visitors rarely experience. This festival has historical roots dating back to the 4th century, traditionally linked to Saint Helena, mother of St Constantine, who reportedly discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem.

A Time for Renewal and Discovery

Spring on the Costa del Sol offers something increasingly rare in popular destinations—space to breathe and time to discover. Morning walks along the seaside promenades feel private and peaceful. Afternoon explorations of hillside villages are quiet and relaxed, with plenty of parking and an atmosphere of unhurriedness. Evening tapas can be enjoyed without reservation stress, along with many other experiences, making spontaneity that much more rewarding.

Springtime joy is evident everywhere on the Costa del Sol

For those considering a move to the region or investing in property, spring presents the Costa del Sol at its best. The moderate temperatures, reduced tourism, and vibrant cultural calendar combine to showcase the authentic lifestyle that has drawn expatriates and seasonal residents for decades. Whether you’re planning a short vacation or considering a longer stay, springtime here delivers the essence of Mediterranean living at its finest.
